LEX GREY & THE URBAN PIONEERS |
Lex
Grey has mesmerized New York's
die-hard music lovers since she
thundered on the scene like Mae
West on a Harley. Rapidly rising
to the status of cult rock diva,
her repertoire blends the
tortured soul of the blues with
bawdy burlesque and Brooklyn
attitude. A highlight in New
York area clubs and festivals,
Lex Grey and The Urban Pioneers
have cultivated a gritty
sophistication uniting unusual
instrumentations, traditional
blues and hard hitting classic
rock. Born of an impromptu
acoustic jam in the back of a
Williamsburg (Brooklyn) bar, The
Urban Pioneers have expanded to
include Leo Binetti(bass), Steve
Sclafani. (drums), and Victor
Deyglio (guitars),
Walter Tates on
Sax and Steven Charles Cecil on
keyboards.
On stage The Urban Pioneers
explode with energy and passion
creating a musical and visual
patchwork of wild rock concert,
bar room blues, vaudeville
theater and after-hours jazz
jam. Fronted by sultry Lex in
her sequined gown, torn fishnet
stockings and well-worn
motorcycle boots, the band's
eclectic earthiness draws in and
embraces people of every taste
and background. I'm not
conscious of trends- I don't
believe you have to fit into a
mold." Lex says. "We just stay
true to our instincts and
influences and it seems people
can identify with this honesty.
Regardless of culture,
regardless of trends, if it
comes from the heart, it's both
timely and timeless."
'They will leave your head in
the clouds and your ass on the
barroom floor'

LITTLE TOBY WALKER |
|
Toby Walker is a unique,
accomplished fingerstyle guitar
virtuoso. Toby is adept at
blues, rags, hot country
picking, and
coaxes more out of a guitar than
anyone can imagine, but the
originality doesn't end there.
He is also a skilled singer and
songwriter who draws inspiration
from traditional and
contemporary music. Toby takes
that musical foundation and
creates
something uniquely his own and
has been eagerly received in
various venues including concert
halls, festivals and
coffeehouses
throughout the U.S., England and
Europe.Toby’s passion for blues,
rag, folk, and other traditional
American music drove
him to leave an apartment
crammed full of recordings,
books and instruments for the
Mississippi Delta, Virginia and
the
Carolinas where he tracked down
some of the more obscure -but
immensely talented - music
makers of an earlier era. He
learned directly at the feet of
Eugene Powell, James "Son"
Thomas, Etta Baker, and R.L
Burnside, among others. The
talent,
passion, and soul of a Toby
Walker performance reflects
these travels. Whether it is
telling the humorous and
heartwarming
tales of other masters, talking
about his inspirations, or
astounding you with his mastery,
his performances are a
feast for the senses. The
audience is moved in ways that
delight them long after the
encores. You can catch a taste
of these
stories on his Web site in the
"Blues Travels" section. But
make no mistake about it - he is
to be experienced live. Those
fortunate enough to attend one
of his shows will vouch for
that. The love Toby has for his
craft pushes him to share his
history and experience where he
has performed in libraries and
schools allowing others to share
the sounds, sights, and emotions
of his
unique abilities. His teaching
credits include, among others,
Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch
in Ohio. In 2006, Carnegie Hall
acknowledged his rare talents
and hired him to augment and
teach in their "American Roots"
program aimed at honor
level middle school students.
This one-of-a-kind series
demonstrates the history of
blues music and traditions,
while teaching
the history of African Americans
as they migrated from the south
into the north. His mastery of
the blues was recognized
in Memphis when he won the
International Blues Challenge
Award.There is no doubt that
Toby Walker has found his life's
calling, and as a result
everyone keeps calling for more
Toby Walker.

HEATHER 'LIL MAMA' HARDY BAND |
|
Heather began studying the
piano at the age of six and
picked up the violin at nine. In
1983 she auditioned for the
Manhattan School of Music as a
double major on piano and violin
and was accepted on both, but
was required to choose only one.
She began as a piano major under
Zenon Fishbein and after one
year realized that though piano
was her great love, she was more
driven on the violin. Heather
returned the following year as a
violin major under Raphael
Bronstein. While at school she
began to play in the subway to
make money while collaborating
with different blues and rock
musicians. This was the turning
point at which she began to
explore improvisation on the
violin. In 1986 she studied with
Julius Lyonn Lieberman, author
of The Improvising Violin and
also joined the False Prophets,
a well-known punk rock band on
Alternative Tentacles Records.
In 1989 she moved to Tucson
and soon after joined the Sam
Taylor Blues Band. Sam has had a
major influence on Heather's
career as a mentor and friend
and they continue to perform
together. In 1996 she released
her first solo recording,
Violins, to critical acclaim on
Trope Records. In 1997 Heather
moved to New York where she
started her own band, Lil Mama
and in 2000 she released her
second album, I Believe.
Heather is a member of The
American Roots Orchestra, Tim
Beattie's Big Dog Marble and The
Amazing Incredibles. She
freelances throughout the New
York area where she is much
sought after as a musician and
vocalist with an original style
that shows the influences of
Claude Williams, Gatemouth
Brown, Papa John Creach, and
Jimi Hendrix.

JP BLUES BAND |
|
JP
started playing guitar at the
age of 8 and by age 10 it was
clear that something special was
happening here. This "Something
Special" was recognized by
legendary bluesman
Sam "Bluzman" Taylor.
Sam took JP under his wing and
began to school him on the
blues, or what Sam use to call "SAMerizing"
him. It was under Sam's watchful
eye that JP began to flourish as
a musician and a bluesman! By
age 11 JP progressed to the
point where he was ready to play
large festivals, and play he
did! JP began playing throughout
the country with
Sam Bluzman Taylor,
Phil Grande and MNB3 opening for
such artists as
Derek Trucks,
Johnny Winter,
Robben Ford,
Joe Bonamassa,
Cactus,
among others.
In addition JP had the
pleasure of sharing the stage
with such legendary artists as
Michael Falzarano
(Hot Tuna),
Chris Beard,
Debbie Davies,
Pete Sears
(Jefferson Starship),
Buddy Cage
(New Riders),
Caroline Aiken,
Geoff Ackerson,
Jon Paris,
Kerry Kearney
(Marty Balin), Phil Grande (Joe
Cocker),
Scott Holt
(Buddy Guy) and so many more. JP
was recently invited to perform
with
Vince Converse,
Nathaniel Peterson and Dennis
Innessibuw (Robert Plant) at the
Rory Galleger Tribute show in
New York City as well as being
invited by the
Georgia Music Hall of Fame
to play with
Caroline Aiken
and
Three 5 Human
at the
Hard Rock Cafe in Atlanta
Georgia.
Now, With all this experience
under his belt JP decided it was
time to take the music to a new
place! Together with industry
veteran Drummer Pat Adkins (Gary
U.S. Bonds, Chuck Berry, Bo
Diddley, BB King) and an amazing
young bassist John Young, JP
began to lay the foundation for
the JP Blues band.
The first project was to
compete in the
Long Island Blues Society
Blues Challenge. The JP Blues
band took the competition hands
down and earned the right to
represent Long Island in the
Blues Foundations
"International Blues Challenge"
in Memphis Tennessee. While in
Memphis JP and the JP Blues Band
gained the respect and
admiration of not only artist
they competed against such
artists as Ruf Recording artist
"Oli
Brown",
but also past IBC 2006 winners "The
Homemade Jamz Band".
It was clear with JP's
searing, soulful blues guitar
backed by the solid rhythm
section of Bassist John Young
and Veteran touring/session
drummer Pat Adkins the JP Blues
Band combined a unique mixture
of a hard rocking edge and gut
tearing blues that gives hope to
the rebirth of passion and soul
in the music!
